Profile

Anjolie Ela Menon is a senior artist whose work captures a melancholic, yet robust depiction of the common Indian person. Whether it’s an old woman sitting on a charpoy sunning herself in her garden, surrounded by crows or a robust priest taking a dip in the holy Ganga, Menon captures a slice of their life while infusing it with her compelling narrative and style. Her paintings are dominated by flat areas of thick bright colour, with sharp outlines that were painted ‘with the vigour and boldness of extreme youth. Her preferred medium is oil on Masonite, though she has also worked in other media, including glass and water colour. Her paintings are in several major collections. Most recently (2006), a major work “Yatra” was acquired by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, California. She was awarded the Padma Shree in 2000. She now lives and works in New Delhi.
